OIN serves diverse patient population through Regional Cancer Care Northwest (Thunder Bay)

Executive Summary:

Innovators at Regional Cancer Care Northwest are implementing the OIN to meet the information needs of the largest region in Ontario.

Toronto, Canada – January 2, 2011 – The OIN is serving patients with unique needs and backgrounds across a disparate and broad region during implementation of the OIN at Regional Cancer Care Northwest.

The OIN will support clinicians, educators, navigators and community care providers, helping patients become engaged by actionable, tailored content to support their cancer journey.

Murray Rochon, president of Jack Digital Productions, said: “This implementation of the OIN in the Northwest will use the OIN model to outreach to a disparate community all the way up to Hudson Bay.

“One of the challenges faced by healthcare is supporting people who find themselves with a cancer diagnosis but miles away from a cancer centre. The OIN will help the regional cancer program to support local patients and also reach those people in remote communities, providing early support to answer those individual questions, helping to reduce distress and anxiety early on.”

Patient Summary Forms printed at the point of diagnosis will connect patients to tailored, comprehensive OIN content. Usage patterns and comments are tracked and reported weekly, providing a feed-back loop for ongoing development.

Implementation includes clinical champions, educators, navigators and community care providers.

The OIN is the result of the work done by Jack Digital Productions and a multidisciplinary team of health professionals. Integrated within clinical care, it gives clinicians, educators, navigators and community care providers a comprehensive web-based program that enables patients to participate as active partners in their care and wellness.
